Ngaruawahia is the Maori capital of New Zealand, the centre of Waikato Maori and home of the Maori King.  As one of the oldest and richly historic towns of the northern Waikato region, and due to its strategic location Ngaruawahia was once considered as a site for the capital of New Zealand.

Ngaruawahia offers a fine heritage trail to trace the history of the Maori King Movement (Kingitanga) close to State Highway 1.
